Trendlines are hypotheses about the angle of advance or decline. Markets rarely honour a single geometric line forever. In Foundations we teach a two-line method: a primary line anchored to the clearest swing pivots, and a secondary “respect” line that tracks the most recent series of highs or lows.
When price closes beyond the primary line on your working timeframe, pause before declaring the trend finished. Check whether the secondary line still connects meaningful pivots and whether momentum on the next higher timeframe agrees. Many ASX trends flatten into ranges before reversing; treating every breach as a reversal creates whipsaw journals.
Redraw rules should be written before the session. Ours for the cohort are simple: a line may be adjusted once per week if a new pivot is clearer, and never mid-trade to rescue a position. If you need a third redraw inside five sessions, the market is likely ranging and horizontal zones deserve priority over diagonal ones.
Bring a before-and-after screenshot of a redrawn line to class. The conversation is usually more instructive than another indicator overlay.
